Year 6

Year 6 children take the lead in many aspects of school life. They all have prefect responsibilities and some of them are elected as house captains and vice captains to support younger pupils across the school. Many of them support members of staff in their break and lunch times so embed their understanding of team work.

Leadership is a vital aspect of our curriculum in Year 6. Children act as leaders in many ways and provide a sound support for the school as a whole: activities include 'Young Leaders' working with KS1 pupils at lunchtimes, 'Peer Mediation' when older pupils are available for younger pupils at playtimes and lunchtimes to help them sort out disagreements etc and 'Young People’s Parliament' representing us within the Handsworth Association of Schools.

In terms of the curriculum, our children are thoroughly prepared for the challenges of formal assessment. We provide support in small groups for all pupils whilst maintaining the balance of the curriculum as a whole. As part of the work undertaken to prepare for the Sacrament of Confirmation, children are asked to carry out five hours of Christian Duty, using the Gifts of the Holy Spirit as a guide.

Pupils undertake a residential visit to Min y Don Christian Adventure Centre near Barmouth in Wales over a long weekend in the summer term during which various challenges such as rock-climbing, abseiling, orienteering and canoeing are provided.

In the later stages of the year, Year 6 curriculum is delivered through a range of exciting projects each fortnight. The children work very independently and take a team approach to their learning. IT-based work is a regular feature in this year group, developing skills for the workplace of the future.
